Type In Motion: Kinetic Kufic
This project explores how motion can breathe new life into traditional typography.

As part of my practice-based research during my Master's studies at the University of Portsmouth, this project investigates how motion in type, or kinetic typography, can create new expressions, evoke emotions, and elicit fresh reactions from audiences. Focusing on Square Kufic—an ancient Persian calligraphy celebrated for its geometric precision and cultural depth—I explored the possibilities of challenging deep-rooted perceptions about this script by introducing motion into its structure. Through a combination of semiotic analysis, typographic experimentation, and interactive design, this work reinterprets the script, bridging the gap between tradition and contemporary design while celebrating cultural heritage in a modern, dynamic context.

The showcased works highlight my efforts to breathe new life into the ancient Square Kufic script by incorporating motion and interactive elements into its traditional structure. Each piece represents a blend of historical reverence and modern creativity, demonstrating how kinetic typography and graphic design can transform a static calligraphy into a dynamic and emotionally resonant experience. These designs aim to challenge perceptions, evoke fresh interpretations, and create a deeper connection between the audience and this timeless art form.

Rooted in cultural heritage and typographic innovation, this project explores how kinetic typography can reframe traditional scripts through motion and interaction. Conducted as part of my practice-based research at the University of Portsmouth, the work investigates the emotional and expressive potential of movement in type—focusing specifically on Square Kufic, a geometric form of Persian calligraphy.
Through semiotic analysis, motion design, and interactive experimentation, the project challenges conventional perceptions of the script by introducing rhythm, transformation, and digital responsiveness. The result is a series of animated and interactive pieces that honour Square Kufic’s historical significance while reimagining it for a contemporary, emotionally engaged audience.
